The AMSOIL World Championship Snowmobile Derby is not only the largest and most prestigious snowmobile competition in the sport that hosts oval, sno-cross and vintage racing, it is one of the highest-ranking winter sports events in the Midwest, recognized around the world.

Since the 1960’s, the sport of snowmobiling has offered a unique form of family winter recreation that has become the lifeblood of winter tourism in more than 25 Snow Belt states.

The AMSOIL World Championship Snowmobile Derby is the sports largest single event. The Derby, known as the “Indianapolis 500 of Snowmobile Racing” attracts more than 40,000 spectators. Fans travel from all over the United States and Canada to watch more than 500 international drivers race their high-tech snowmobiles at speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour on a solid ice oval, or marvel at the high flying sno-cross pilots as they maneuver over a demanding sno-cross course. The race is held on a fully contained, half-mile banked oval track located in the heart of one of Wisconsin’s most popular resort areas, Eagle River. The track has been home to the event for 45 years.

If there is an innovation or a trend in snowmobile racing it can be traced in Derby history. The track is one of the few snowmobile race facilities that lend itself to duel venue race presentation, as the sno-cross course is fully contained inside the half-mile ice oval, providing optimum spectator viewing. The derby ensures that racing will happen, even in a low snow year, with their snowmaking machine, water tanker, and Bombardier groomer for the sno-cross course.

The past few years the event covered a full eight days of racing and related winter activities. It has proven enormously successful, and the next event will again be billed: RACE WEEK
